The Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences is administered by a Director appointed by the University Grants Commission from among the academic staff members of the University of Peradeniya for a period of three years. The Director is a full-time officer of the Institute, and the principal executive officer, the principal academic officer and the chief accounting officer of the Institute.
Dr. J. M. Ananda Jayawickrama, a Senior Lecturer in Department of Economics and Statistics at the University of Peradeniya has been appointed as the first Director of the Institute in May 2015. Dr. Jayawickrama obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the National University of Singapore in 2006. He teaches quantitative subjects in economics such as micro-economics, statistics, econometrics and policy related courses such as public finance, public and economic policy analysis and industrial economics and policy. His research interests are in the areas of taxation and expenditure policies, sustainable budgetary policy, trade and investment policy, consumption habits, macro-econometric modeling and policy simulation, issues in time series econometrics, etc. Dr. Jayawickrama has published many articles in international as well as local journals and in book chapters. He has also served as a Development Economist at the International Labour Office in Bangkok and a Research Fellow at the Singapore Centre for Applied and Policy Economics. Before appointing as the Director of the Institute, he engaged in the administration of postgraduate programmes of the Faculty of Arts as the Chairperson of Faculty Higher Degrees Committee.
